19 Burgundy Eyeshadow Looks That Enhance Every Eye Color

@patrickta / INSTAGRAM

If youre looking to switch up your everyday makeup look, then incorporating burgundy eyeshadow into your makeup routine might just be the way to do that. The deep reddish-purple shade may seem a bit avant-garde at first but its surprisingly wearable. Burgundy is a great alternative to the usual brown, copper and gold shades people usually wear and its universally flattering across a range of skin-tones.

For the day time, applying a light wash of burgundy all-over your lids can really make your eyes stand out, especially if theyre hazel or green. A highly-pigmented shade of burgundy paired with a black eyeliner can be great if youre going for a dramatic effect. If the thought of wearing burgundy eyeshadow is out of your comfort zone, think of your entire look as a whole and try a uniform approach. “Try picking out a burgundy eyeshadow and then using a blush with a deeper, more burgundy tone too. You could also try pressing some of the eyeshadow colour onto lips or going for a gloss or lipstick that is a similar shade to your eyes,” Buster Knight suggests.

There are many ways to rock burgundy eyeshadow and ahead, are 13 different ways our favourite celebrities have worn this flattering shade.

Lily Collinss Burgundy Smoky Eye

If a smoky eye is the little black dress of the makeup world, this burgundy version is the sequin mini you break out when you really want to make a splash. Swapping your go-to brown or black shadows for a burgundy hue feels classic with an unexpected twist. To recreate Lily Collinss look in a swipe, use a shadow pencil to fill in the entire lid, then use a fluffy brush to blend the edges. For a sultry look, lightly smudge the shadow along the lower lash line. Revolution Beauty Londons Reloaded Newtrals 3 Shadow Palette ($8) can help you get the look.

Sofia Carsons Winged-Out Look

The only thing more dramatic than a deep Bordeaux shade of matte eyeshadow is a striking winged-out shape. For a crisp cat-eye like Sofia Carson, apply tape on the outer corners of your eye before blending your eyeshadow. Peel off the tape and clean up the edges with your favorite concealer.

Hailey Biebers Garnet Glitter

@haileybieber

As if a wine-colored shadow wasnt dynamic enough, the addition of glitter will give your eyes a twinkle like no other. A liquid shadow with built-in shimmer will give you tons of shine like this one worn by Hailey Bieber, plus it wont fall and leave you with sparkly under-eye circles. Use the doe-foot applicator to apply the shadow on the entire lid and lower lash line, then blend the edges with an eyeshadow brush. Haus Labs Hy-Power Eye, Cheek & Lip Pigment ($24) in the shade Burgundy Shimmer can help you get the look.

Halston Sages Graphic Crease

Why blend a darker shade of burgundy into your crease when you can create a graphic stroke of genius instead? To recreate Halston Sages artsy look, blend a burgundy shadow across the entire lid. With a darker burgundy eyeliner, fill in the crease, creating a single line the width of your eye. Dont blend it out—the harsh edges make this look special. Knight says using a bronze eye pencil along the lower lash line will help pull this look together.

Shay Mitchells Garnet Gradient

For a lighter, brighter take on the burgundy smoke show, go with a gradient à la Shay Mitchell. Apply a light wash of the reddish shade along your entire lid and lower lash line. On the inner corners, smudge a highlighting shadow to make the eyes pop. For a perfect gradient, pick an eyeshadow quad with cohesive shades built in for easy pairing. Elf Cosmetics Bite-Size Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($3) in the shade Berry Bad can help you achieve this look.

Priyanka Chopras Monochrome Makeup

Wearing burgundy lipstick and eyeshadow feels glamorous and modern. Makeup artist Anna Inglis Hall suggests applying 19/99s Precision Colour Pencil ($26) in the shade Bor all over the lid and the lower lash line, as well as on the lips.

@stormreid

Who said burgundy eyeshadow has to be for dramatic looks only? A little goes a long way in creating a fresh but impactful finish. We love how Storm Reid pairs her shadow with a matching lip stain and some subtle blush for the most effortless monochrome moment.

If shimmer isnt your thing, you can still get tons of dimension in your eye makeup with a completely matte collection of shades. Just look at Lili Reinhart. For a look that pops (without the shine), apply the darkest shades on the outer corners and in the crease. Add a lighter shade on the center of the lid and the lightest on the inner corners. When applied in this order with shades in the same color family, your eyes will have tons of depth and wont fall flat.

Taylor Hills Crimson Cat Eye

@taylor_hill

Taylor Hills crimson cat eye is proof that eyeshadow doesnt need to cover the entire lid to qualify as a standout look. To recreate it, highlight the brow bone and create some soft contouring in the crease. With a reddish burgundy shade and an angled brush, create a wing that extends from the inner corners, out past the outer corners. "Blend, blend, blend the wing out with a fluffy brush until its blown out to create a soft focus effect," Knight recommends.

@rachelzegler

Where theres smoke, theres fire. Smolder by going all out with burgundy and its adjacent shades like Rachel Zegler does here. "To recreate this look add a deep burgundy shade to the outer V of the eye and lash line. Blend the colour out, buffing gently up towards the head of the brow and also drawing the color up and out towards the tip of the brow," Hall says. "Then add the same shade to the lower lash line. You can afford to come down to the lower crease of the eye to get that blown out smokey effect. Blend this to connect with the upper eye and then add lashings of volumising mascara."

Olivia Rodrigos Sharp Statement

@oliviarodrigo

With the right technique, you can bring the best of eyeshadow and eyeliner together for a bold, seamless look as seen on Olivia Rodrigo here. Apply a burgundy kajal liner across the lash line and into the outer V of the eye. Then with a flat brush, blend the lines so they are softened but still look graphic. Bring the same colour into the inner corner of the eyes to add dimension. Hall says to add a liquid liner and shimmer eyeshadow to the centre of the eyelid to make this look really pop.

JTs Very Berry Look

The whole point of this look is more is more and no one could pull this off better than rap superstar JT. Hall suggests using Urban Decays Naked Sin Mini Eyeshadow Palette ($33) to recreate JTs look. The key to this look to apply a burgundy shade all over the lid and the lower lash line, then to bring the color further down until it touches the top of where you would place highlighter on your cheeks. To make sure this bold looks ties in together, try to make sure your eyeshadow color matches the shade of your blush. "To look extra snatched, carve out the brows with a little concealer," Hall adds.
